The thing about glitter is if you get it on you, be prepared to have it on you forever. Glitter is the herpes of craft supplies.

Behind the Brush :: Faeries and Fantasy

I fell in love with Faery folklore a few years ago, right around the same time I started painting. Here are a few of my faery/fantasy pieces, among these are some of my first paintings.

I think this was the first Faery painting I ever did.

Behind the Brush :: Commissions

On occasion, people have presented me an idea, concept, or color scheme, commissioning me to paint for them. I always feel flattered, nervous and excited. I love to paint, and commissioned work is a great opportunity to paint large pieces without the personal investment.

This three canvas painting was one of the first commissioned pieces I ever painted. A friend, who recently purhcased a new home wanted a large piece with Japanese flair. He wanted it to look like it was a section from a much larger painting, like part of a puzzle.

Inspired by love creating new life, this piece was painted with no brushes, just my fingers and acrylic paint. I love the way acrylic paint moves and dries on a canvas.

A few years ago, my friend Heather and her husband Pat started a Realty company, Plumbline Realty. Both Christians, Heather and Pat wanted a painting for their board room that reflected their "upright" name.

This next piece was a particular challenge. Not because of the painting, but because of the space it was going to fill. The person commissioning this piece had a narrow wall that connected two rooms, that had a light switch in the middle of it. Presented with a decorating obstacle, she wanted a piece to help make the rooms look larger and connected, needing something to camouflage the light switch placed dead center on the wall. This piece helped give the illusion of a wider space and connected the color schemes for the two room.

Tonight's the Night!

Oh I'm doing it, and there is no one here who can stop me.

After spending the last two weeks replenishing our binkie and ball inventory, I have moved on (again) to Christmas stuff! Our Dad just made a few more sleds for me to paint and I've been working on replenishing our Christmas Ornaments. And tonight my friends, I will listen to Christmas music while I work. There I said it, and there is no taking it back.

Behind the Brush :: Nudes

Original Print Date: Saturday, September 19, 2009 by Sonia

In an effort to develop my own style, when I started painting a few years ago, I eagerly tried to paint various subjects. One subject I found challenging and exciting to paint was the female form. I spent time looking at photographs and other paintings, carefully looking at where the light and shadows fell. Here are a few of my favorites. Viewer discretion.

Untitled

This is the first one I painted. A little too perky for my liking, I gotta work on that.

Untitled

I next moved on to the female form in corsets, creating a whole new painting obsession. I even wore a corset to an event to get a feel for the pressure and pinching the women before us endured for fashion. This painting is my favorite corset painting and it is hung in my home.

Girl with Red Hair

I love this little painting. It is part of a private collection.

Untitled

The back is so vulnerable. This painting is part of a private collection.

Stamina

Original Post Date: Friday, August 28, 2009 by Sonia for Vervain Designs

My dog Ozzie, after a busy day of sewing. Poor thing has no stamina.

Well Andrea's away with her family and I have more time on my hands than I know what to do with. Vervain Fair is only two short weeks away and there's still lots to do. My friend Aileen and I ventured out Wednesday afternoon and again this morning to put posters around the community to advertise our show. I am happy to report that although there were a few close encounters of the scissors kind, all of the posters were put up without any blood shed. Aileen tends to be a little accident prone, but you didn't hear it from me.

I'm pleased to report that I've finished painting the Christmas sleds our Dad made. Take a look: these handmade and hand-painted gems are one of a kind Christmas finds!

We've also designed ultra plush baby Binkies sure to entice any little darling!  These sweet comforts feature new and upcycled cheille backings paired with bold graphic cottons and irresistable ribbon tags. Perfect for infant play and snuggle time.

Behind the brush :: trees

Original Print Date: Monday, August 24, 2009 by Sonia

Trees are one of my favorite subjects to paint. The painting below is untitled and proudly hung in my home. This is my most favorite painting to date.

Frozen
A chilly reflection on red with metallic accents. This painting is currently available to purchase, for full details please contact me. $75.

Cast Me Gently into Morning
Currently on display at Vibe this piece is up for purchase, $600. Please contact me for details.

Basement Window
You guessed it, this painting was inspired by a view out of a basement window. This piece is currently available for purchase, please contact me for more information.

There was always this one tree... it was near the exit to Bedford on the 102, that always caught my attention. With development, unfortunately it is no longer there. It has, however, served as inspiration on many of my painting... it always looked like it was reaching for something or someone.

I'll share more of my tree paintings again and hope to paint many more.

Blue Paint on my Elbow

Original Print Date: Wednesday, August 15, 2009 by Sonia for Vervain Designs

A beautiful sunny day and I'm painting Snowmen! Vervain Fair is fast approaching and we're working hard to have lots of beautiful things at our table. We've convinced our Dad to join the ranks at Vervain Designs! Our Dad is a carpenter who makes all kinds of cute little things out of wood. So far for the show he's made sleds that I'm painting... hence the blue paint I found on my elbow last night. He also makes accessories for our dolls, like rocking chairs and cradles.
Vervain Fair Craft Show will take place on Saturday September 12 at St. John the Evangelist Church Hall in Lower Sackville. This year's show will feature nearly double the exhibitors as last year and features free admission!
